Eighteen years ago, when I was a two handicap golfer in New Jersey, I went through a 6 month search to find the best golf retirement community.
I searched all over Florida, but found the majority of areas too crowded. I also decided that the weather (with fears of hurricanes and humid/hot temperature) was not a good fit for me.
I love the shore communities - but with expensive/increasing hurricane insurance, and way too much traffic during the summer months, I continued with my search for the ideal retirenment community.

Gated Golf
MidSouth and Talamore were two separate golf communities that now
offer a joint membership. MidSouth, located in a gated golf community about 1 mile from the Pinehurst traffic circle, has an Arnold Palmer golf course that is one of the finest in the Carolinas. The Talamore golf course, designed by Rees Jones, is located across the street
from MidSouth and offers a excellent challenge to all levels of play.
Tobacco Road
This is an 18-hole Mike Strantz course. All golfers will appreciate the generous landing areas, long grass that’s relatively easy to find and hit balls out of, and free practice swings in the waste areas. Some golfers aren’t huge fans of: the hidden fairways (and greens), and the massive tiering on the greens.

Continuing my search for a retirement community, I found that Pinehurst North Carolina offers a fantastic lifestyle not available anywhere else in the US.
